Thane city is one of the major urban conglomerations of Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and is well connected to all parts of the country by rail and road. The city's proximity to Mumbai, the commercial capital of India and location at geographical center of MMR has given tremendous impetus to the growth of industries in and around Thane. The Thane Municipal Corporation is the first municipality to make incorporating rain water harvesting and solar energy mandatory in all new projects. Thane also is the first city in the state to have bio-mechanization plant which is a process of bio-waste management to generate electricity.
